The Jobs of Yesteryear series combines history and surrealism to tell the stories of obsolete jobs. A contemporary glimpse into the past, these mixed-media paintings serve as a reminder of a time and stories long forgotten.

This particular Job of Yesteryear mixed-media painting features lumberjacks. Logging revolves around convenience.  Early on, logs were harvested near waterways and floated to the mills.  As forest stands were depleted, loggers had to go further into the forest to get the logs and also needed new means to get them out.  Oxen and horses were first used to drag the timber out of the forest, and these were eventually replaced by steam donkeys, locomotives, and finally, the logging truck. Trucks have improved greatly over the years, with many modern trucks featuring a crane or lift mounted to the truck bed, making the lifting of these giant logs immensely easier than the loggers of old who only had a peavey and man-powered leverage at their disposal.  Drones are also a new modern innovation utilized by logging companies to scout out ideal locations for their harvesting.

The Lumberjacks II was created with acrylic paint. The long-limbed character was cut from paper and collaged with kraft paper. The Jobs of Yesteryear are thought-provoking conversation pieces that will bring an air of history and whimsy to any room.
