The Jobs of Yesteryear series combines history and surrealism to tell the stories of obsolete jobs. A contemporary glimpse into the past, these mixed media paintings serve as a reminder of a time and stories long forgotten.

This particular Job of Yesteryear mixed media painting features a ferryman. The profession of the ferryman has been around since ancient times, with Greek mythology telling of Charon, the boatman who ferried souls across the River Styx to the Underworld. Ferrymen knew their crossing like the back of their hands and would utilize sails, oars, and cable systems to transport people and goods across the waterway. Steam power eventually allowed for much more freedom to navigate waterways in most directions and the railroad generally made boat travel obsolete, but ferrymen and their ferries continue to be important in certain areas of the world.

The Ferryman IV was created with acrylic paint. The long-limbed character was cut from paper and collaged with kraft paper. The Jobs of Yesteryear are thought-provoking conversation pieces that will bring an air of history and whimsy to any room.
