The Fishwife Print

from $75.00

Limited edition reproduction of The Grape Stomper from The Jobs of Yesteryear Series.

Hefting 50-pound baskets of fresh fish from the seashores to the local market, calling to customers all while in their signature colorful language, the fisherwives were a sight to be seen and a force to be reckoned with. The wives of fishermen, the women often got up before their husbands to mend the nets and catch bait. They were also responsible for cleaning the fish in the icy waters, after which they would heft their baskets full of fresh fish into the market to peddle to the townspeople. These women were shrewd negotiators that employed foul-language and keen wits to get the most for their family’s catch. Improved boats and fishing technology changed the way families fished and the role of the fishwives.
