Tall Tales tell stories of my life thus far: the experiences, dreams, fears and aspirations that I've collected in my 33 years of adventure. The lanky-limbed characters spin a collective yarn, uniting the viewer and artist in an unfolding tale of artist's life.

The series puts an instrospective and contemporary twist on western art. I create fictional characters and rood them in the nonfiction narrative of my life, bridging the divide between reality and my imagination. The mixed media paintings feature four characters that represent different aspects of my identity: Slim Pickens, Bluebeard, Jack Knife and The Lady. Read more about the series >

In this piece, Jack Knife takes form as a composite of deep blues and purples, culminating from an array of black drips, which represent negative thoughts and actions. This piece shows how negativity can compound upon itself in my mind, potentially driving me into a pit of self-doubt and self-pity. Jack's left eye is under a patch because when I was three, I ran into a tree and damaged my left, forever altering the way I see the world. I've accepted this accident as part of what made me the person I am today, and in a strange way. I'm grateful for it. It taught me the power of being grateful for the amazing gifts I've already been given, rather than wishing things were different and feeling sorry for myself.

Tall Tales is both a contemporary spin on western imagery and a glimpse into the fiber of my being. These energetic mixed media paintings are full of life and sure to inspire conversations about the tales that they tell, both tall and true.
